Heritage events plans outlined

A SPECIAL launch event for the forthcoming Civic Societies Week was held at the Royal Hotel in Scarborough.

People from various societies all over the region were invited to get together yesterday and discuss their work and plans for this year's week of activities.

Adrian Perry, chairman of Scarborough Civic Society, said: "As a society we really just want to have a beautiful place to live and make it better.

"This week is all about making sure as many people as possible hear this message."

Mr Perry gave a run-down of events planned for Civic Societies Week in Scarborough, which starts on the week commencing June 21.

On Tuesday June 22 there will be a heritage bus tour highlighting the historic and cultural heritage of Scarborough.

Tours will set off from Holbeck Clock Tower at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

On Wednesday June 23, a restored weather station will be set up in Sandside at 11am and a blue plaque unveiled on the Spa Cliff Lift lower station at 2.30pm.

And on Thursday June 24 there will be a model of Scarborough on display at St Andrew's Church, Ramshill.

Guest speaker at the launch was writer, broadcaster and architectural historian John Grundy.

He said: "I've been coming to Scarborough for a long time to make films and I've revisited some of my favourite bits today.

"There are some wonderful buildings and beautiful areas, such as South Cliff, the Esplanade and the Crescent.

"Scarborough is lucky in having all these places and the topography that sets them off."
