Help on the way for bomb blast Scarborough soldier Tom
SCARBOROUGH'S mayor and the Evening News today joined forces in an appeal to help a soldier who lost both legs in an explosion in Afghanistan.
The campaign hopes to raise thousands of pounds for Tom Davis-Lawlor, 19, of Bracken Hill, in Barrowcliff, who was injured while on foot patrol in Bashran, Helmand Province.
A generous anonymous Scarborough businessman yesterday donated 10,000 to Tom, who is with the 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (The Green Howards).
The businessman told the Evening News: "The thought of that young lad losing his legs is terrible. I hope we can do what we can to help him."
Residents in Barrowcliff have donated nearly 500 to the fund. Tom is now recovering at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham.
Mayor Cllr Bill Chatt, said: "I think it is so important that we all help Tom.
"He is one of our lads. He went to some of our schools. He is one of our own and he has done us proud.
"It is important that he leads a normal life. This money will help that.
"The first thing we plan to do is buy a laptop for him and one for his mum Josie. At the moment Josie cannot stay with him in Birmingham. She lives in Scarborough and has her job and children to look after.
"We want to buy them both laptops with web cameras so they can speak to each other whenever they like. It is important that he speaks to his mum as often as he can."
