Google Street View comes to Scarborough
Last Thursday almost all of the United Kingdom's roads, both rural and urban, covering a total of approximately 238,000 miles, were added to Google's Street View facility including those of Scarborough.
Street View takes the mapping of our streets to a new level, allowing you to visually explore and navigate a neighbourhood through panoramic street-level photographs.
It was launched on May 25, 2007, originally only in the United States and has since gradually expanded to various locations throughout the world.
We reported in March that the Google's specially adapted Street View car was driving the streets of Scarborough and taking photogrpahs of the town.
The specially designed cars carry a camera assembly mounted on the roof which houses nine directional cameras for 360 views which takes pictures from a height of about 2.5 metres
Where available, street view images appear after zooming in beyond the highest zooming level in maps and satellite images, and also by dragging a "pegman" icon onto a location on a map.
You can move the 'pegman' around the small map to select a street to view and then navigate along the street using the white line arrows which denote the path taken by the photo car. The arrows link to the next photo in each direction and at junctions and crossings, more arrows are shown.
