Gipsies: legal action to be considered - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

MAGISTRATES will decide tomorrow whether to take action against gipsies who have settled on land in Centurion Way.

The travellers have refused to use the official site in Stoney Haggs Road and moved on to land at Centurion Way in Crossgates – as they did last year.

Scarborough Council has served an application to have the band of travellers removed from the site.

Ian Anderson, Scarborough Council's head of legal and support services, said: "On 1 July 2009 the council became aware of circumstances which indicated events surrounding the Seamer Horse Fair could commence at land on Centurion Way in Scarborough despite the council's best efforts to avoid this.

"The council consulted the owners of the land, Persimmon Homes, who confirmed they had not given consent for this and it would amount to trespass."
