George Pindar Community Sports College may take on Eastfield sports centre role
ROLLER disco and roller hockey could be on the cards if governors at George Pindar Community Sports College take over the running of the sports facility next door to their school.
A proposal by school governors to take on the management of the Pindar Leisure Centre in Eastfield looks set to be approved today at a meeting of Scarborough Council chiefs.
The move comes less than three months after the college became the first in Scarborough to be awarded Foundation School status, which means governors have a lot more freedom to run things the way they want to.
Headteacher Hugh Bellamy said: "Initially people won't see any difference in the level of service they receive but in the long run we hope to provide a more flexible and diverse range of activities.
"Obviously we've been planning this move for a long time. We think our standing in the community will allow us to operate a sports facility more sensitive to local needs, putting on different activities like a roller disco at times when the centre isn't being used for more traditional pastimes."
The ownership of the school buildings and the land it stands on has been transferred from the Local Education Authority to governors of the trust which includes trustees appointed by Sheffield United Football Club, print giants Pindar and Scarborough Council.
The sports centre is currently managed by the council but if governors take over the management of the sports facility they will become the employers of the staff who work at the centre as well as taking on responsibility for the costs of the operation and maintenance.
Ian Anderson, head of the council's legal and support services, says discussions with the school trust have been constructive but the details still need to be finalised.
He said: "George Pindar Community Sports College have been active in engaging the community and promoting sport and recognise and wish to promote this role and undertake activities, such as the operation of the leisure centre which they regard as complementary to their role as a college for the promotion of sporting excellence.
"The council has an interest in the future success of the leisure centre and an agreement for the transfer has been drafted that sets out a minimum defined level of service that the college will be required to meet.
"The agreement also provides for the consultation and engagement with people who use the sports centre and its facilities."
