Gas pipe work gets under way - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

DRIVERS look set to face more months of misery after new roadworks led to traffic hold-ups in Scarborough.

Work started yesterday to repair a gas leak at the junction of Seamer Road and Valley Road.

Three-way lights are in operation and work is expected to take about a week to complete.

The improvements will be the first in a series of upheavals for motorists between now and the end of the year.

Extensive work will take place to replace ageing gas mains in the town centre from Monday September 20. This will lead to traffic restrictions around Victoria Road which could last for more than six weeks.

At the same time, Albemarle Crescent will be closed for a major road resurfacing project for about five days, and similar work is planned for other main access roads across Scarborough.

Scarborough Council has admitted disruption is inevitable but says there is no other way of delivering the scheme.

Highways service manager Nigel Wintringham said: "I do hope residents will bear with us as it progresses. We thank everyone, in anticipation, for their co-operation."

The disruption comes only three months after the completion of gas mains work in Falsgrave, which had been in progress since last October.

The work in Victoria Road will result in the easterly carriageway being closed between Aberdeen Walk and Northway for the duration of the works, while the junction of Victoria Road and Hanover Road will be closed during work on that section. A diversion will be put in place via Columbus Ravine, Dean Road and the Castle Road traffic lights.

Traf?c accessing Victoria Road from Cambridge Street, Hoxton Road, Victoria Street and Vine Street will only be able to turn right. Vehicles will also be restricted to a left turn only from Victoria Road into Barwick Street. Work is expected to take about six weeks to complete.

The works and the road closure will affect motorists who use Albemarle Crescent to get to Westborough between Albemarle Crescent and Northway, York Place and Alma Square. Drivers wishing to access Alma Square

will be permitted to get into the area through the pedestrian precinct, but only before 11am or after 4pm.

Businesses in these areas are being reminded that delivery vehicles will not be allowed to travel through the precinct area between 11am and 4pm.

Aberdeen Walk and the residential streets off it will also be affected, but it is hoped to free up access to Albemarle Back Road by the second day of the works. Again, businesses are asked to plan their deliveries for before 11am or after 4pm to enable the vehicles to get out via the precinct area.

Residents in the streets off Aberdeen Walk and those in Albemarle Crescent who have permits will be able to use these to park in the William Street car park for the duration of the work.

Local bus operators are putting in place alternative arrangements for the week concerned: stops outside the railway station or temporary stops in Northway between Victoria Road and Westborough will be used. Passengers are asked to look out for notices which will be displayed at the current stops and on the buses.
