Former Scarborough lifeboatman at the helm of floods rescue effort in Cumbria
A SCARBOROUGH man was in charge of overseeing the RNLI's operation to help rescue people stranded by the Cumbrian floods in Cockermouth.
Wave Crookes, 35, served on the Scarborough Lifeboat crew for more than five-and-a-half years, leaving in April last year after being given the job of RNLI Divisional Inspector.
The charity's flood rescue team, inshore lifeboats and volunteers worked with other emergency services to rescue 300 people from the Cumbrian town after heavy rain saw water levels reach 2.5 metres in the town centre.
