Figures add up for youngsters
PUPILS at a Scarborough school proved their maths skills added up after helping to break an online world record.
The children from St Martin’s Primary School took part in World Maths Day alongside more than one million students from 235 countries to correctly answer nearly 480 million questions.
The competition – which broke the previous record by more than 28 million answers – saw each student take part in 100 games at five different difficulty levels with pupils moving to more testing questions with the more correct answers they gave.
Deputy headteacher Andy Duncan, said the day had given the pupils a fantastic opportunity to extend their maths skills.
He said: “It was tremendous to be part of it and made the children realise that maths is a language in itself.
“Although the children taking part were from different countries the language of maths brought them together and once you started answering the questions it was quite addictive.
“It was staggering for the children when they saw how many people they were playing against and really exciting for them when they saw who they were up against, including students from Australia and America, which brought out a lot of healthy competition.”
