Fears grow for missing Pebbles the Sainsbury's cat

THE hunt is on for Scarborough's most famous feline.

Pebbles – the Sainsbury's supermarket cat who bit a four-year-old child – has gone missing from its new Staxton home and staff hope shoppers will join in the hunt for the missing moggy.

Sainsbury's spokeswoman Fiona Daplyn said: "We're told Pebbles has been missing for over a week. Last Thursday one of our staff thought he'd seen her, and when he told me I rushed straight out to look for her, but I couldn't find her anywhere. I hope she's okay – everybody here would be really pleased to see her."

Shoppers at Sainsbury's yesterday said they were sad and worried that the cat had disappeared.

Kerrie Hesp, of Elmville Avenue, said: "It's very bad news – seeing Pebbles was always part of the shopping trip and my little girl used to really look forward to seeing her.

"I hope the poor thing is found. It would be interesting to know if she's trying to find her way back to the shop – I've heard of homing pigeons, but a homing cat's a new one!"

Christine Greening, who lives in Fulford Road, added: "I'm very worried about Pebbles. I know there was controversy when she bit that child but I always liked to see her. I've lived in Scarborough six years and she's just been part of the place."

Worried web users have contacted the Evening News website expressing their fears for the furry fugitive.

User Newbie believes the cat is trying to return home. He posted: "Yes, its owner does live in Roscoe Street. But after pebbles got accused of biting that child she was rehomed with a relative of her owner, I think at Staxton.

"She has since got out and, as cats do, she is probably trying to find her way back to her original home. As I said before, I hope she's okay."
