Exploring town's jewels
SCARBOROUGH'S Stephen Joseph Theatre threw open its doors to visitors yesterday as part of a series of Heritage Open Days exploring the magic of the town's hidden jewels.
The theatre is also hosting a backstage tour today at 1pm, meeting in the entrance foyer, although pre-booking is essential; on (01723) 370541.
Heritage Open Days take place each year and aim to raise public awareness of the built, historical and cultural heritage, in the town. The events run until Sunday.
People can see buildings not normally open to the public, such as the Freemasons' Lodge in St Nicholas Cliff, the seafront Toll House, the Spa Theatre and Trinity House.
The events are organised by Scarborough and District Civic Society in conjunction with Scarborough Council, North Yorkshire County Council, Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society and Scarborough Museums Trust.
Adrian Perry, chairman of Scarborough Civic Society, said: "Heritage Open Days are getting more and more popular as people really enjoy the events that are staged."
Angela Doherty, who is managing events for Scarborough Museums Trust, said: "We were delighted by the response during last year's Heritage Open Days and, this year, we already have tours that are full. People in Scarborough cherish the town's heritage and we are always delighted by the response to the opportunity to go behind the scenes."
