Exploring the magic of town's heritage jewels

A SERIES of free Heritage Open Days are soon to get under way in Scarborough.

The events will run from Thursday until Sunday (10 to 13 SEPT] and feature behind the scenes tours, guided walks and exhibitions.

Heritage Open Days take place each year and aim to raise public awareness of our built, historical and cultural heritage.

Buildings which are not normally open to the public, such as the Freemasons' Lodge in St Nicholas Cliff, will be open for free.

Adrian Perry, chairman of Scarborough Civic Society, said: "Heritage Open Days are getting more and more popular as people really enjoy the events that are staged.

"We've got a lot of wonderful things to see in Scarborough and a lot of support. The walks are always very popular and we're featuring a new one in Ayton this year."

Angela Doherty who is managing events for Scarborough Museums Trust, said: "We were delighted by the response during last year's Heritage Open Days and, this year, we already have tours that are full.

"Scarborough cherishes its heritage and we are always delighted by the response to the opportunity to go behind the scenes."

The events are organised by Scarborough and District Civic Society in conjunction with Scarborough Council, North Yorkshire County Council, Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society and Scarborough Museums Trust.
