Dignity in Care charter for support services

CARE providers in Scarborough and across the region are being encouraged to sign up to a newly launched Dignity in Care charter.

The charter, which has been put forward by North Yorkshire County Council and the Independent Care Group, underlines what a person can reasonably expect when they need and use care and support services.

The document focuses on issues such as:

l treating each person as an individual by offering a personalised service

l enabling people to maintain the maximum possible level of independence, choice and control

l listening to people and supporting them in expressing their needs and wants.

Mike Padgham, who runs Scarborough-based company TwentyFour7 Care Services and is chairman of the Independent Care Group, said: “This is a very significant step for social care in this area.

“Signing up to this charter demonstrates a fundamental commitment to providing the very best social care that we can in North Yorkshire and in doing so, keeping dignity and respect at the core of everything that we do.

“It has long been my view that if vulnerable people do not have respect and dignity, then they have nothing. The launch of this charter gives everyone involved the opportunity to show that commitment.”

Derek Law, corporate director for North Yorkshire County Council’s adult and community services, said: “We are delighted to be launching this charter in North Yorkshire as we want to ensure that people enjoy the dignity and respect to which they are entitled.

“Offering older and vulnerable adults respect and maintaining their dignity is a fundamental part of any care relationship.

“We are encouraging all care providers in the county to sign up to this important charter and make a real difference to people’s lives.”
