David is all set to get out on the crime-fighting beat

A NEW community support officer will be joining the fight against crime in the Scarborough area as part of the latest batch of North Yorkshire Police's PCSOs.

PCSO David Twyford will be based in Malton after his initial training with 13 other recruits.

All the PCSOs have completed an intensive eight-week basic training course which covers law, personal safety, information technology and first aid.

PC Andy Hardey, of the force's training unit, was responsible for equipping the students with the skills they will need when patrolling the streets.

He said: "I would like to congratulate the student officers for the successful completion of their initial training course. I also commend all the officers for their dedication and professionalism.

"Even though the class as a whole were undergoing a substantial change in their work and personal life they always maintained a sense of humour and there was a great team spirit within the group.

"I have no doubt that if the officers can take this team spirit, along with the other qualities and attributes they have displayed during the course, into their operational life, they will be valued members of both the community and the police service."

The course ended with a community assessment day, in which the recruits were assessed on how they handled real-life situations such as finding missing children or dealing with drink-related disorder.

Chief Constable Gra- hame Maxwell welcomed the new recruits to the force.

He said: "I congratulate all the new PCSOs on reaching this important milestone in their careers.

"PCSOs play a key role within the policing family, engaging with communities and addressing issues affecting the lives of local people and they play an important part in helping to make our neighbourhoods safer.

"I welcome them to the force and wish them all well in what will be a very rewarding, varied and interesting career with North Yorkshire Police."
