Crime pays for top authors
IN what could have easily been a trip to the dark side, the crime panel proved to be one of the funniest and most entertaining events during the festival.
The conversation was in full flow as Mark Billingham, Stephen Booth and Denise Mina bounced off each other under the solid guidance of host Natasha Cooper. Hot topics ranged from their previous careers, entering crime writing, bizarre reader complaints, villains and the subjects they avoid writing about.
Often self deprecating, honest and laugh out loud funny, the trio were a joy to watch with each author’s personality shining through. Mark Billingham displayed his prowess as a funnyman, Denise Mina dazzled with her anecdotes and Stephen Booth proved a wise talent. They also discussed more serious aspects about their profession including research, the gore and balancing the warmth with the darkness in their work.
But when Natasha cheekily asked about the worst act they had ever committed, the laughter filled the concert hall.
In the literature world of fictional writing it seems that crime does indeed pay.
