Community sentence for man, 21
AN ex-serviceman who sold stolen goods belonging to a man who is nearly blind has been given a community order.
Nathan Cammish, 21, of no fixed address, admitted charges of handling stolen goods and fraud by false representation during the hearing at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court.
The court heard that on December 28, Cammish had been to a gathering at the complainant’s flat and left at around 5am.
Later the man found a number of items were missing, including a Buffalo 1Tb hard drive, and believed them to have been stolen.
Kathryn Reeve, prosecuting, explained that later the same day, Cammish had entered Cash Generators in Newborough with the hard drive and sold it for £25, assuring staff it was his to sell.
She added: “When the defendant was arrested, he told the police an acquaintance had given the hard drive to him. It has now been recovered and given back to the victim.”
Cammish, who was subject to a community order at the time, told a probation officer that he “did not want to work for free and would rather go to prison”.
Richard North, mitigating, said his client felt “ashamed” about the offence and had only kept £10 from the sale, giving the other £15 to the person who had asked him to do it.
He added that Cammish was currently homeless and had recently been in hospital having fallen and cut his head.
Mr North said: “He accepts that he needs to focus on his situation and that he will only make things worse by not complying with the court’s orders.”
Cammish was given a 12-month community order with 150 hours unpaid work. He was not ordered to pay costs as he already owed £900 to the court, which was being deducted from the his benefits.
