Coach park choice for multi-million pound sports centre - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

THE Weaponness Valley Road coach park is front-runner as a possible site for Scarborough's new multi-million pound sports centre.

The centre became part of the authority's future plans after it emerged that the McCain Stadium – which the council bought for 1.335 million last month – would cost too much to return to a useable condition.

At a meeting of Scarborough Council's cabinet yesterday the coach park, currently being used as a park and ride site, was the only area identified by name as a location for the town's proposed state-of-the-art sporting facilities.

Ian Anderson, the council's head of legal services, said: "Obviously we're at the very early stages of the process but we have identified the Weaponness area as one that might meet our needs."

In response to a question by Cllr Lucy Haycock, Mr Anderson added that it would not be possible for the authority to develop a sports centre on the McCain Stadium site as there was not room.

He said: "The football element alone takes up the majority of the space."

He refused to identify a timescale for work on the proposed new facilities, saying: "To do so would be to invite problems."

The cabinet was also told that an offer to buy the stadium's two recently built stands, one of which was installed in 1995 and one in 1996-97, had been rejected as they could be easily relocated and could still have a role to play at the new site.

Mr Anderson added the offer received was around 10 per cent of the cost of building new stands and the amount offered was "not a fixed price but the start of a negotiating process".

The McCain Stadium fell into dereliction after the demise of Scarborough FC in June 2007, and has since been the

target of vandal and arson attacks.
