Clint Eastwood's son booked for festival
THE son of a Hollywood superstar is set to make Scarborough's day by appearing at the town's prestigious Jazz Festival.
Guitarist Kyle Eastwood, 41, the son of movie legend Clint, will appear on the festival's Friday night bill which also includes the Mike Janisch Quintet and Dave O'Higgins Quintet.
Eastwood junior, who has starred in several of his father's blockbusters, including the Oscar-winning Bridges of Madison County and The Outlaw Josey Wales, says he inherited his love of jazz from his parents.
He has also played on the soundtrack of some of his father's films, including his latest, Gran Torino.
Meanwhile the event's organisers received a major boost after being given a grant of 11,500 from the Arts Council.
Organiser Mike Gordon said: "We are over the moon to have received this grant.
"The money will be used to commission two leading UK jazz musicians – Alan Barnes and Andy Panayi – to write a musical work to be performed at the festival by a 17-piece band."
The festival, whose sponsors include the Scarborough Evening News, runs from Friday September 18 to Sunday September 20.
Mr Gordon added: "I have had this idea lurking in my mind for a couple of years.
"I believe that the state of British jazz is very healthy and distinctive and that we should increasingly question the view that there is a higher standard of jazz performance in the USA.
"This commissioned work, entitled Jazz: The British Story, will focus on the uniqueness of our jazz culture and the strength of British composition and our musical heritage.
"It will draw strongly from the British folk tradition and cosmopolitan influences and there will be jazz portraits of some of the British legends like Ronnie Scott and Tubby Hayes.'
Mr Panayi said: "It's a thrill to reflect all this in writing for Scarborough Jazz Festival."
