Scarborough Magistrates Court

A SCARBOROUGH motorist has been banned for three years after a Christmas bust-up put him on the road to despair.

Stephen Purssell, of Westbourne Grove, pleaded guilty to being above the drink drive limit after being stopped by officers in his BMW in December.

Purssell, a 43-year-old salesman from the Blue Dolphin Holiday Park, recorded 72 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

The legal limit is 35 microgrammes of alcohol.

Mitigating, Robert Vining told Scarborough Magistrates’ Court: “If I had a pound for every time this scenario had occurred, I think I would be on some Caribbean island.

“Christmas was coming, he was unemployed and was not receiving anything but state benefits.

“His partner was not happy with the arrangement, they ended up talking about it and ended up having something to drink.

“The classic happened, a row occured and he was criticised because Christmas was going to be ruined because there was no money.

“In the end he’s said, ‘I’ve had enough’ and went out.

“He sat in the car and wanted to cool down.

“He admits he got in the car but cannot say why.”

After disqualifying Purssell for three years, magistrates also fined him £280 and ordered him to pay £85 costs.
