Chatting to God on the internet

SCARBOROUGH is to get a sneak preview of the ultimate in digital communication – talking to God on the internet.

Visitors to the Digital Scarborough exhibition at the Spa on Friday and Saturday will be invited to say a prayer for the town and its inhabitants via a digital lava lamp.

Other attractions will include a virtual tour of the human body and skeleton.

People can put on a headset and conduct a three-dimensional tour of the body with the application developed by Hull University.

The university's digital arts course, based at its Scarborough campus, will also be exhibiting at the event, alongside Yorkshire Coast College, with a showcase of this year's most exciting student projects.

The young and young-at-heart will be given opportunity to compete in a computer games tournament with the chance of winning an i-pod donated by Scarborough-based business Deep Sea Projects.

Those as interested in their roots as in the future of Scarborough can learn how to trace their family tree over the internet.

School and college students from all over Scarborough will visit the event on Friday and meet young professionals working in digital industries in Scarborough.

They will learn what it is like to work as a mutimedia developer or web designer.

The prayer computer application has been developed by Scarborough-based design consultancy Electric Angel and commissioned by several international Christian organisations including the Church Mission Society and Youth for Christ.

Electric Angel's creative director Adrian Riley said: "It's assumed that prayer is something that mainly goes on in Church buildings, often read from a carefully-prepared book of liturgy and using words that are hundreds of years old.

"We're asking people to think again. Is it possible to pray using cutting-edge technology, and does God still hear those prayers?"

The application will run on any modern personal computer with an internet connection and enables users to click on the moving blobs of a lava lamp to turn them into prayers.

Mr Riley said: "The words aren't stored electronically, so it means it can still be a private thing, even though anyone can watch your prayer float around afterwards. It's actually quite meditative."

He said the event was about a vision for Scarborough in which the latest technology could transform the town's prospects.

"Perhaps some people will find the answers to their prayers for Scarborough's future in the message of the event," he said.

The event is a collaboration between the urban renaissance initiative and Scarborough Enterprise Agency and runs from 10am to 4pm.
