Charity moves into new headquarters

A SCARBOROUGH charity which has been on the go for more than 25 years is celebrating the completion of its new headquarters.

Dial a Ride is now based at Londesborough Business Park after moving from Allatt House in West Parade Road.

The charity provides fully accessible door-to-door transport for those over retirement age who have a disability or find it difficult to get out and about.

The new premises have undergone a massive transformation during the past year and work on the building is now complete.

The total cost of the project has been 170,000, which has come from grants, donations and fundraising events.

Manager Julie Banks said: "What we've achieved is a great credit to everybody.

"We are all incredibly proud of the results and we couldn't have done it without all the volunteers.

"The building has been completely transformed and should hopefully see us through the next 25 years!"

Dial a Ride's new base features a bookable training room, staff room, garages and plenty of parking for the fleet of nine minibuses.

Speaking at the grand opening, Laurel Armitage, chairman of the board of trustees, said: "When staff and volunteers moved into this site last year it was like a building site.

"They had to put up with less than ideal conditions, and I can't praise them highly enough.

"After months of upheaval we finally have premises to be proud of."

She also thanked Ms Banks and deputy manager Tim Lawson for all their hard work.

The building was officially opened by Conservative parliamentary candidate and Shadow roads minister for transport, Robert Goodwill, who unveiled a plaque in the new training room.

The charity currently has 1,300 registered users and last year carried out 43,000 passenger journeys.
