Charity dials in to a 25-year milestone

VOLUNTEERS, clients and staff from Dial-a-Ride enjoyed a civic reception at Scarborough's Town Hall to celebrate the service's 25th anniversary.

Dial-a-Ride’s manager, Julie Banks, said: “It is good that the staff and volunteers’ hard work is recognised. We rely on volunteers and fundraising, and the celebration was really a thank you to all those who have supported us.”

Dial-a-Ride is a Scarborough-based charity which helps elderly and less-abled people to places they would otherwise have difficulty reaching.

Rose Maclaurin, 87, of St Martin’s Square, said: “I could not do without Dial-a-Ride. They take me shopping on a Friday. It is door to door. They carry all my shopping right into the kitchen for me.”

She said they also took her to the hospital for a much cheaper rate than taxis.

Kathleen Elliott, 92, of Quaker Close, said: “The service is more than valuable. They have been a

fantastic support for me. I have used Dial-a-Ride for more than 12 years. We always go to lovely places with them, they always find different places to go. We all enjoy it immensely. Those who work for Dial-a-Ride are more than kind.”

Volunteer Arthur Miller, 71, has worked for Dial-a-Ride for seven years.

He said: “It is an important link for so many people. It enables them to go out and about to all sorts of places, like hospital appointments, hairdressers. You name it we take them there.”
