Cancer awareness event at supermarket
AN awareness-raising event was held in Scarborough to coincide with Ovarian Cancer Month.
Nurses handed out free information and advice at Sainsbury's in Falsgrave about how to spot the symptoms of cancer.
The event was organised by Sue Thompson, the Scarborough health trust's clinical nurse specialist within gynaecology and oncology.
She said: "Most women are now aware of breast and cervical cancer however many are not aware of the symptoms of ovarian cancer.
"It is vital that women know what the symptoms of this cancer are as there is so much more that can be done for the patient if the cancer is caught early. "This is why it is so important that we get out into the community to raise awareness and educate local women."
The key symptoms to be aware of are persistent pelvic or abdominal pain, increased abdominal size, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly.
Occasionally there can be other symptoms such as urinary symptoms, changes in bowel habit, extreme fatigue and back pain. These may be experienced on their own or at the same time as the key symptoms.
It is most likely these symptoms are not ovarian cancer however they may be present in some women with the disease.
