Burglary trio jailed after foiled raids

York Crown Court

York Crown Court

THREE men who used a stolen car to cross the country intent on targeting Scarborough homes were foiled when two women found them in their homes, a court heard.

After breaking into the Wheatcroft home of an 81-year-old woman the trio, from Liverpool, fled, but not before one of them pushed passed the frightened pensioner and smashed his way out of doors into the garden.

Within a short space of time on the same day, August 1 last year, the three were at the home of a recently widowed and disabled woman in Tricourt, near Edgehill Road.

This time the householder spotted one of the burglars half way through a window, he climbing back out when challenged and ran off with his companions.

Before the court for sentencing was Benjamin Boyea, 19, and Kane Bagley, 20, who had both previously admitted two charges of burglary.

Bagley had also pleaded guilty to handling stolen vehicle registration plates which had been used to disguise the stolen car in which they had all travelled to Scarborough.

The third burglar, Mark Hughes, 24, was previously jailed for five-and-a-half years after admitting the burglaries.

On that occasion the York court was told that he had a long record for burglary.

Bagley, who has previous convictions for robbery, arson, burglary and handling stolen goods, was said by Matthew Stephenson, mitigating, to have had a poor start in life.

For Boyea, Christopher Moran said his client had told a probation officer that he felt “sick and horrible” about having committed the offences, believing that the houses would be empty during the day.

Bagley and Boyea were both sentenced to three-and-a-half years in a Young Offenders’ Institute.
