Boxer Ingle and four others honoured by the town

SCARBOROUGH’S former boxing world champion Paul Ingle is one of four men to have been made a freeman of the town.
Ingle and local businessmen Andrew Boyes, Tim Boyes and Don Robinson will be granted the Freedom of the Borough of Scarborough at a council meeting on Friday in recognition of their “eminent services to the community”.
The honour has only been bestowed upon 15 people since Scarborough Council was given the power to make the award in 1974.
Past recipients include Sir Alan Ayckbourn and Sir Jimmy Savile.
The council will also make former mayor and councillor Lucy Haycock an Honorary Alderman in recognition of her services given to the council between 1983 and 2011.
Former IBF featherweight champion Ingle, whose career was cruelly cut short by terrible injuries sustained in a world title clash in December 2000, has reportedly been promised the freedom of Scarborough twice – once after he returned from the Olympics in 1992 and again when he turned professional two years later.
A Facebook group calling for the council to recognise the Edgehill fighter’s achievements attracted more than 1,000 members in less than a month.
Ingle, 39, said: “I’m absolutely chuffed.
“If it wasn’t for the support of the people of Scarborough I would never have achieved what I did. They followed me everywhere, even to New York.
“I did achieve but there’s a lot of people that do good things in Scarborough. I want to say thanks to everybody in the borough who has supported me.”
Andrew Boyes, 64, said he was delighted to received the honour alongside his cousin Tim Boyes, also 64.
Together the pair have been at the helm of the Boyes empire for more than four decades as joint managing directors.
Andrew, who is now chairman of the company, said: “As a Scarborough guy, born and bred, to be recognised like this is fantastic and a huge honour. I could not think of anything I would rather have.
“It is fantastic too to be recognised alongside Tim as we have been somewhat of a double act all this time.”
Entrepreneur Mr Robinson, 77, who is a former chairman of Scarborough Football Club, said he was “thunderstruck” at the news, adding: “I am surprised and delighted. I feel very proud. I was rather startled because I have been outspoken at times, but it has always been with the good of the town at heart.”
Mrs Haycock said: “For some people to become the mayor, they say it is the icing on the cake. I was not expecting that so to get this title is the cherry on top of that.
“I was delighted when I found out I had been given the honour. It is most humbling and I am very grateful for it.”
Scarborough Council’s chief executive Jim Dillon said: “It is with great pleasure that we ask Full Council to endorse these honorary positions in recognition of the hard work and commitment they have each given to the borough over many years.
“We also recognise the high regard in which they are held by local people and the many things they have achieved as ambassadors for the area in which they live and work.”
