Bosses call time on music venue
BOSSES of an established music venue in Scarborough will close the doors for the final time this weekend, after putting the business up for sale.
Bar Zero, which is being sold as a going concern for 50,000, has been run by the present owner for the past three years.
Mandy Messruther, who runs the Westborough club with her partner Stewart Messruther, said the time had come to move on and concentrate on other business interests in the town.
She said: “We have property and a flourishing business interest in Turkey which we recently decided to commit more time to, so unfortunately something had to give, and although we love England, working in warmer climates is very attractive.
“The last official night for us will be Saturday when we hold the Tunnel Club Reunion. We would like to invite everybody who remembers the Tunnel Club and all our friends, and work colleagues past and present to come along and enjoy our last night with us.”
Mrs Messruther, who has worked in the pub and club trade since 1995, said they had brought the old Tunnel Club DJ, Mark Starkey, out of retirement for the occasion.
She added: “I have worked in the industry through some major changes, the most recent been the smoking ban, which although didn’t really effect my establishment has affected some of the other venues in town.
“Working with my partner at Zero I have brought some of the best tribute bands and live music acts to the town that I have ever seen.
“We have travelled hundreds of miles to see most of the acts before we decided to book them, so when they went onto our stage we knew our customers were in for a good time.”
During the past year tribute acts to bands such as Coldplay, Jamiroquai, Meatloaf, AC/DC, Guns and Roses and The Beautiful South have played at the venue.
Mrs Messruther added: “This decision to move on is by no means any reflection on our staff. Their commitment and approach to work has been exemplary over the last few years.
“They have been a team, who’s sole goal while at work, has been to ensure every one of our customers has had a great time while in our bar."
She added that support from other businesses, such as suppliers and entertainments companies, had been significant in Bar Zero’s success.
The sale of the club, which used to be known as Liquid and Murrays before that, is being handled by Scarborough estate agents Colin Ellis and Mrs Messruther was hopeful for a quick sale. She said: “We hope the new owners will enjoy running the venue as much as we have.”
