Blue Plaque unveiled for historic cliff lift - COMMENT ON THIS STORY
A BLUE plaque has been unveiled outside the historic Spa Cliff Lift lower station to recognise the significance of the local landmark.
The lift, which opened 135 years ago and within two years was said to carry 3,500 passengers a day, is currently out of action due to technical difficulties.
Scarborough Civic Society commissioned a ceramic artist to produce the plaque, which will form part of the Heritage Trail, as part of Civic Societies Week.
A spokesman for the group said: "It's hard to understand how we have not previously recognised the significance of the Spa Cliff Lift with a Blue Plaque but we have corrected that oversight.
"The lift was the first passenger cliff tramway in Europe, possibly the world, and it set an example to be followed by a large number of holiday resorts.
"The tramway opened on July 6 1875, having cost 8,000. The system of conveying passengers from cliff top esplanades to the undercliff below was extremely influential in the way a number of resorts developed in the late 19th century, many other resorts following Scarborough's lead."
