'Be patient' plea on new skate park

SKATEBOARDERS eager to make use of a new facility on Scarborough's Marine Drive are being urged to be patient.

Work on Hairy Bob’s Skate Park was due to be completed by the end of June, with an opening event planned for July, but a number of people have been entering the construction site through the fencing after works finish for the day, and at weekends, causing damage to the unfinished ramps.

The damage means the park will not open now until the middle of August and Scarborough Council chiefs are now pleading with skateboaders and BMX riders to stay out of the park until work is completed.

Helen Percival, community involvement officer for the council’s parks and countryside department says as the completion of the skate park gets closer, construction on the site has reached a critical stage where concrete is being laid on the ramps.

She said: “It is very important that no-one skates or rides on the ramps until they are fully set, as doing so could permanently damage them, which would result in delaying the opening of the facility.

“We would urge people not to enter the site at this critical time and ask for patience so that work can be finished on time for the opening event. We want everyone to enjoy the park, but the ramps need to be allowed to dry out and settle for everyone to obtain the maximum enjoyment for years to come.

“It is a site for all skateboarders and BMX riders, so I would ask the minority that have been entering the construction site, not to spoil the park for the majority who are looking forward to using the site when it officially opens. People should also remember that the skate park is still a construction site and, for their own safety, should not be going into it.”

The official opening of Hairy Bob’s Skate Park is scheduled to take place on Saturday August 15.

On that day Scarborough Borough Council in partnership with Skate 4 Scarborough will be organising a “Skateboard and BMX Jam” with music, refreshments and various stalls.
