Bake for the quake: Scarborough pupils raise £800
PUPILS at a Scarborough school rose to the challenge after baking cakes and selling off their cherished toys to raise money for the Haiti earthquake appeal.
The youngsters from St Martin's Primary School made 837.33 after a week of fundraising which was the idea of two of its pupils, Florence and Freddie Pitchford, both aged eight.
Teacher Emma Potter said she was thrilled with the amount and praised the children and their parents for offering their support for people in Haiti.
She said: "It was completely the children's idea to bake and sell cakes and they also wanted to have a toy sale.
"During the week they sold the cakes for 20p on stalls at morning play time and also sold buttered toast.
"The parents were absolutely fantastic and after we sent out a newsletter telling them about the cake sale, the next day we were just inundated with cakes.
"It was amazing that among all the hard work they do during their day they found time to do that.
"We were really appreciative of the support from parents and extremely lucky to have so many who backed our appeal."
