Backing for open air theatre plans
PLANS to build a permanent backstage area at Scarborough's Open Air Theatre have received unanimous backing by councillors.
The decision was made by Scarborough Council’s planning and development committee and will now see the construction of the building, which will house artists performing at the venue.
Scarborough Council and entertainment management company Apollo Leisure lodged the application, which received objections from Scarborough Civic Society who said the prospect of a “timber shed” was not very attractive and questioned whether such a facility was needed on the site.
However, speaking before the decision, Scarborough Council planning manager, Jill Low, said the new facility needed to be considered in the context of the modern needs of the Open Air Theatre.
She said: “The building has been designed to provide a facility of an appropriate quality to attract quality acts and performers to the venue.
“The proposal to clad the roof with blue-black natural slate with the walls in a timber clad finish is designed to match the style of the new miniature railway ticket office and the proposed new control point buildings to be constructed as part of the Open Air Theatre improvement works.”
The 3.5 million scheme to transform the Open Air Theatre is scheduled to be completed by May, with Scarborough Council due to handover management of the venue to Apollo on July 30.
