Awards for the Lilac Ladies!
A GROUP of women who participate in a Tai Chi-based exercise class have held their presentation evening at Gatesgarth Community Centre, Newby.
The 20 members of the group, whose ages range from their mid-thirties to their nineties, are in their fifth year of training together.
Presentations were made by Jennifer Bennette, who administrates the awards scheme. The women then enjoyed refreshments.
The sessions have proved so popular that the class has become oversubscribed and a waiting list has been set up.
Gloria Axham, who runs the class, said: “It is quite unusual for some of the ladies to be practising Tai Chi at their age, but we have a nice little group and it is a fantastic way to keep fit.
“I’ve got all the videos from the old masters and I make my own variations which we can manage. Everyone wants to feel fit, and training together makes it a lot easier.”
The class, which meets every Thursday, practise fitness exercises and routines with grips, balls, chains and chairs.
The women have recently got club T-shirts, and, after much debate, decided that lilac would be the most appropriate colour.
“Some of the younger members wanted red, but we decided that lilac would be the most relaxing colour for Tai Chi. We’re the lilac ladies!” added Gloria.
