The image was released by the Leeds-based firm to the Evening News after it said rivals Tesco were the front-runners in the fight for a new store.

Scarborough Council meets to discuss the merits of plans submitted by Tesco and Asda on Monday.

Bosses at Asda, which is part of the Wal-Mart business empire, say 290 new full and part time jobs would be created at its proposed new store which would have a sales area of 30,000sq ft and has been designed to complement the listed old jail on the former council depot.

As well as offering the full Asda range, George clothing would also be on sale and the site would have a petrol station.

Asda chiefs say detailed independent research carried out by pollsters Populus, shows that their store - is the favourite choice out of the four main UK supermarket retailers.

They said 76 per cent of respondents saying they would like to see an Asda store on the Dean Road site. Asda property communications manager, Philip Bartram, said: "From our polling results a new Asda was the preferred choice for the site out of the major supermarkets.

"The store would provide the full Asda product range including the renowned George fashion brand, ASDA own brand and Extra Special ranges and of course our Petrol Filling Station would provide low cost fuel.

"Our new store would deliver more supermarket shopping choice for the community in Scarborough and would create around 290 new full and part time jobs with tailored training and a host of other benefits. During difficult economic times, we will work closely with Jobcentre Plus and other agencies to target local job seekers.

"We wanted to come up with a design that is sensitive to the setting of the site and we are hopeful of bringing an ASDA store to Scarborough at Dean Road."
