Army chiefs praise Scarborough's Heroes Welcome

ARMY chiefs have praised organisers of Scarborough's Heroes Welcome scheme after they offered support to an injured soldier, who was refused a room at a hotel.

Organisers of the discount scheme arranged a deal for Corporal Tomos Stringer, 23, when they heard he had been snubbed by the Metro Hotel in Woking, Surrey after he showed his military identification.

The Scarborough Hospitality Association offered him two free nights' accommodation at a hotel in the town.

John Senior, co-ordinator of Evening News-backed Heroes Welcome, said Cpl Stringer could also have a complimentary meal for two including wine at the Tricolos Italian Restaurant and a lobster meal for two at the Golden Grid Fish Restaurant.

Cpl Stringer, of the 13th Air Assault Support Regiment of the Royal Logistics Corps, was forced to sleep in his car following the incident. He had travelled to Woking to help arrange the funeral of a friend who had been killed in action.

Cpl Stringer, of Pentrefelin, Criccieth in North Wales, had been flown back from Afghanistan for hospital treatment after he broke his wrist when he fell from a truck during a firefight.

He is now back fighting in Afghanistan.

A spokesman for the Metro Hotel has apologised for the incident and said there was "a mistake by a duty receptionist".

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: "Knowing that they have huge public support helps our armed forces enormously. Any local scheme which recognises their efforts to bring peace and stability to both Iraq and Afghanistan is whole-heartedly supported."
