Armed police raid: shock for Scarborough resident

A SCARBOROUGH man has told of his terror as armed police crashed into his bedroom at the crack of dawn.

Adam Dykes, of Trafalgar Square, had a rude awakening at around 7.30am to find a policeman holding a "taser" stun gun at the foot of his bed, backed up by two more armed officers.

Mr Dykes told the Evening News: "It was pretty scary, very scary, in fact. I didn't have a clue what was going on.

"One of them was holding a taser about four feet away from my face and the other two had guns that were pointed down. It's the first time I've seen an automatic weapon up close.

"They had smashed the lock on my door getting in."

The armed officers said they were responding to a report of a man wearing a grey tracksuit waving a gun about in the Trafalgar Square area in the early hours of Saturday.

"I've got a grey tracksuit, but I've no idea why they came here," the unemployed 41-year-old said. "I've been in a bit of trouble before but never anything involving weapons. It must have been someone making a random call."

Four officers, at least three of whom were carrying firearms, searched Mr Dykes' basement flat in the Saturday morning raid.

"They were in here about half an hour doing a quick search," Mr Dykes added. "They moved me from the bedroom to the foot of the stairs, facing upwards while they did it.

"Then they said they were happy with their enquiries and left."

Despite finding no evidence to link him with the alleged firearms incident, Mr Dykes said he had received no apology for the raid.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "This appeared to be a genuine firearms incident and had to be treated as such. The 21-year-old woman who made the call has been arrested for wasting police time and received an adult caution."
