Angry drivers start traffic lights protest on Facebook: COMMENT ON THIS STORY
A CAMPAIGN to switch off the traffic lights in Scarborough to test whether it improves traffic flow has been organised through social networking website Facebook.
More than 300 people have signed up in protest against the lights after details were posted on the internet site.
There is ongoing controversy in Scarborough over a number of sets of traffic lights which have been put up as part of the town's new integrated transport scheme which includes the creation of a new park and ride site in Seamer Road, near Deans Garden Centre.
Over the past few months new traffic lights have been installed at the end of Valley Bridge, leading to Ramshill, in Filey Road and at Queen Margaret's Road roundabout.
Among the members of the group to have commented include Andy Hewitt, who said: "I always wonder about the environmental impact of them too. How much power is wasted on them, and the pollution caused by stationary cars? It's even more annoying when filters aren't sequenced correctly – and what about the new ones at the bridge on Filey Road? They go red when there's no other traffic joining the road!"
David Allan Atkinson said: "I truly feel sorry for anyone who has to drive from Falsgrave Road down Seamer Road but at least there's a Shell garage there now so you can replace the fuel wasted when sat in stationary traffic. Mothers on the school run, you have my respect and my sympathy."
Jennifer Lillian Taylor said: "I travel to Barrowcliff to drop my youngest off for nursery. What should take me 10 minutes now takes me 20, wasting my time and petrol. On Friday afternoon I left at 12.35pm and I got outside Hinderwell School and the traffic was bumper to bumper and didn't move for five minutes."
Dawn Plant added: "Surely there isn't a major, or even slightly major road in Scarborough that doesn't have lights on it, but where do you think the council will decide for the next set to go?"
As well as the Facebook campaign group, a petition to remove the lights has also been added to the site and this has already attracted dozens of signatures.
Although the group was set up as a light-hearted dig at the council's decision to install a series of traffic lights around the town, many of those commenting are genuinely fed up with the delays the lights are causing.
The campaign organisers say they intend to present a petition to Cllr Andrew Backhouse today.
They say if they succeed in turning off the lights, and it improves traffic flow, they will then push to have the lights removed.
