Alleged rape: trial postponed

THE trial of two Scarborough men charged in connection with the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl has been postponed until the beginning of June.

Mohammed Hasam, 43, of Castle Road, and Mohammed Abdul Hafiz, 39, of Trafalgar Road, were due to stand trial at York Crown Court this week.

However it was decided that not enough time had been allocated to hear the case and it was adjourned until June 1.

Hasam pleaded not guilty to charges of rape, sexual assault and doing an act intended to pervert the course of public justice. Hafiz denied charges of aiding abetting the sexual offences.

The rape and sexual assault are alleged to have taken place in Scarborough on December 27 2008.

The allegation of perverting justice is alleged to have taken place on January 7 2009.

Both defendants were given conditional bail until the new trial date.
