Albert's 85th is a bonanza for baby unit

A MAN who devoted his 85th birthday to raising money has handed more than £910 to the special care baby unit at Scarborough Hospital.

Albert Fox, of Crossgates, shunned traditional celebrations and invited friends, family and members of the public to the Hilford House Guest House in Seamer Road, which is run by his daughter Dorothy Medd.

Hundreds of people flocked through the doors, and were served free refreshments. Guests then had the chance to make a voluntary contribution to the fund for the baby unit.

Mrs Medd said: "Dad was thrilled to bits to be able to donate the money. They showed us around the new midwifery-led unit and it was nice to see what the money is going towards.

"He was really happy that so much had been raised in his name – we only got the amount we did because of other people's generosity.

"He told everybody that he didn't want presents this year and wanted to raise money instead, but he's rather passionate about blackcurrant jam so lots of people brought him a jar. He had a blackcurrant birthday!"

Mr Fox, who is originally from Hovingham, near Malton, and currently lives in a bungalow in Crossgates, is the president of Pickering Vintage Tractor Group, a member of Filey Fishermen's Choir and also regularly mans an air ambulance stall in Scarborough Market with his wife Maud.
