A hunting they did go
HUNTS across the county were out in force yesterday - despite the ban which prevents dogs from chasing and killing animals.
The Hunting Act 2004 outlaws hunting with dogs, particularly fox hunting, but also the hunting of deer, hares and mink and organised hare coursing, in England and Wales.
All hunts now follow a pre-set trail, but the century-old sport is not carried out in its entirety due to the ban.
Horsemen and women and their hounds met in Middleton, Brompton, Saltersgate, Driffield and Staintondale.
The Middleton Hunt gathered in Malton's market place where hundreds of people went to mingle with the huntsmen, mounted followers and hounds.
Secretary for the Middleton hunt, Joanna Newitt, said: "We still have a lot of support despite the ban - from the landowners, farmers and the general public.
"The hunt continues as part of a tradition we have had in the area for years. Hopefully we will keep on fighting and over turn the government and eventually get the act reformed."
She thanked drivers for their patience yesterday.
She added: "Sometimes the roads can be blocked for some time with the horses and dogs. So we are very grateful for everyone's patience."
