Thanks for care received
I WOULD like to express my gratitude and thanks to Scarborough Hospital for their care and kindness to Peter Slessor during his last illness.
Preserve town’s heritage
UNFORTUNATELY, I do not live in Scarborough at the moment but I was born and raised there and sorely miss the place. Its beauty is unparalleled. The view from the Clock Tower cafe over the glorious Victorian Spa and the expansive South Bay beach cannot be matched. So, it is in utter disbelief and outrage that I have observed from afar the council’s proposal for the Spa’s sea wall.
A wonderful tribute show
THROUGH YOUR column, I would like to say a huge thank you to David and Kerry Nicholson and Jodi Hatton of Twilight Productions for putting on such a wonderful show on Friday and Saturday at the YMCA.
Depot plan costs a cause for concern
RE: MICK Jefferson’s article dated February 15 about our council’s willingness to spend £220,000 on consultants to design a new council depot on Queen Margarets Road.
Put Freddie at Oliver’s Mount
HAVING just read about poor vandalised Freddie and the possible re-siting may I suggest Oliver’s Mount.
Friend Found
I WOULD like to thank the Evening News for helping me contact my friend, Lindsay Penny. It was very much appreciated. Lindsay received an email from her mother-in-law, then she contacted me by letter.
Consultant payments
I entirely agree with Mick Jefferson’s column (February 15) regarding payments to consultants.
Organic approach to our cafe culture
I write in response to the Cafe Tasters’ visit to the Watermark Cafe, North Bay, Scarborough.
1 commentSad Loss
It was very sad that Whitney Houston passed away. She was a good singer, made good records, appeared in good films, she was a all round entertainer. She will be sadly missed,
7 commentsThanks so much for your honesty
After doing my weekly shop on Tuesday at Sainsbury’s I returned home to find I had not got my handbag.
Hi-tech problems
There has recently been some criticism of a proposal to issue councillors with iPads. I wonder if our borough councillors are aware of a warning that using iPads can cause neck and finger injuries? According to one newspaper, doctors are reporting a increasing number of repetitive strain injuries and muscle problems.
A lot to consider when moving ‘Freddie’ sculpture
RE: WE should move Freddie (Evening News, February 10).
1 commentCouncil is ignoring advice of an expert
WITH regards to the council’s decision to proceed with dumping of rock armour in front of the Grade II* listed Spa buildings, our concern is that this is yet another catastrophe for the town and its tourist industry.
1 commentAppeal for information on ‘best boat’ trophy
I WOULD be most grateful if your readers could help me track down information on a trophy awarded annually to the best boat during the autumn herring fishery.
Direct funding to benefit the walkers and cyclists
THE “charm offensive” planned by the North York Moors National Park Authority, in the hope of attracting more tourists, could be better directed to the service of active users of the park, both current and potential.
What will be left of £10 million Tesco cash?
RE THE £3.69 million move from Dean Road to the new facilities at Queen Margaret’s.
Popular hill and field must be saved for public to enjoy
A Great day out for the people of Scarborough
Better job in the 1950s
When I was a lad the main road I lived on connected the two cities of Sheffield and Doncaster with the A1 which at that time was the road to London.
Excuse was just rubbish
A FORTNIGHT ago I was taken very ill in the early hours of the morning and my mum needed to call the doctor out.
Blackpool comments a threat to Futurist
I READ with great surprise “the adapt or die” advice given by ‘Tourism guru’ Iain Hawkins.
Generating too much noise
LAST SUMMER we came up to our caravan at Burnside for numerous holiday breaks, only to have the peace broken from dusk to 5am by a burger bar parked in the lay-by opposite our caravan, on the park near the road.
Development conditions should not be removed
THE LATEST move by Barratt Homes with regard to the proposed development in Cayton is to try to remove conditions 21, 25 and 30 as below:
Our birds need protecting
At LONG last some people are beginning to realise that the RSPB are not doing the job their charity status demands, ie protecting our birds.
1 commentDogs are found new homes thanks to article
I AM writing to say a big thank you on behalf of us all at Cliff Top Kennels Re-homing Centre.
Breakwater solution is a win-win idea
WITH REGARD to breakwaters between South Bay Pool and the Futurist Theatre. A similar scheme was built by the Environment Agency in the 1990s.
1 commentCarry on caravanning
IN THE Evening News on February 2 (parking protest, page three). Cllr Popple states that Scarborough is being developed as an all year round resort.
1 commentEnvironmentalists deserve our support
RE ARTICLE on post mortem of tree saga (Evening News, January 26).
Praise for hospital
HAVING recently been in Scarborough Hospital as a day patient, I thought I would put pen to paper to praise the hospital staff for their kindness, helpfulness and consideration.
Water is problem
RE the lack of bookings at the Open Air Theatre. It might just be me, but I think the water is a problem.
Capacity on agenda
So Mr Gregg of Apollo is blaming the council for the lack of bookings, I presume it is over the seating capacity.
Best choice
Dear oh dear oh dear, I wrote last year asking which of the great London impresarios, say Lord Lloyd Webber or Sir Cameron Mackintosh, would, given the choice, invest money in the Open Air Theatre rather than the Futurist.
Theatres: one single strategy is required
AS ONE of the few musicians to have worked at every theatrical venue in Scarborough since 1985, but also as a performer with a touring group on every stage (with the exception of the Stephen Joseph Theatre) for many miles in every direction, I am very familiar with the theatre per se.
1 commentDon’t blame raptors for big fall in bird population
Re: A Rosbottom’s letter in the Evening News in which he complains about falconry being a blood sport.
2 commentsSense of fair play needed
Oh dear, Fred Goodwin, former boss of The Royal Bank of Scotland, has been stripped of his knighthood. Poor man. Let’s hope he manages to get by on his pension of £325,000 per annum, or thereabouts. He shouldn’t worry too much about the thousands of his former workers who have lost their jobs or the British taxpayers who stumped up billions of pounds to plug his sinking ship.
Why does council need iPads?
SO the councillors want iPads to save us money!! At £400+ each, how many do we need?
