Porn doctor 'powerless' to stop

A DOCTOR returned to watching pornography again at Scarborough Hospital only about five days after he was warned by health bosses about looking at graphic sexual images on a work computer.

The revelation came to light during a General Medical Council “fitness to practice” hearing which was adjourned in Manchester yesterday for medical reports to be prepared.

Before the adjournment the panel said Dr James Christopher Angel, 33, had admitted an allegation of impairment.

A decision on whether or not the doctor would be struck off will be made when the hearing resumes in May.

Dr Angel was employed as a senior house officer in anaesthetics by the Scarborough area health trust between February and July 2006.

Giving its determination the panel said: “As a result of Operation Ore all NHS organisations were asked to monitor their employees’ internet usage.

“It was discovered you had uploaded software contrary to the trust’s internet policy.

“An informal meeting took place and you were warned you should comply with policy in the future.

“You have explained that you abstained from accessing computer pornography at work for about five days, but were unable to refrain for any longer.

“You knew your actions were wrong, but felt powerless to stop.”

The judgement said that at a second meeting Dr Angel had been open and forthright and had admitted what had happened.

Dr Angel resigned the next day and was later dismissed following a disciplinary hearing.

The panel said the websites which were accessed by Dr Angel were not illegal, but were “extreme in nature”.
