A NEW eye treatment room is now up and running at Scarborough Hospital.

The room, which is specifically geared up for eye patients, is part of ongoing improvement and building work to improve the hospital site.

One of its uses is to host a service for patients with wet age-related macular degeneration.

The service means that patients who need to be treated with a drug called Lucentis are now treated at Scarborough rather than having to travel to York.

Lucentis is a prescription medicine, given by healthcare professionals, for the treatment of patients with age-related macular degeneration.

The condition is the leading cause of blindness in the UK, and predominantly affects those aged 55 and over.

It currently affects an estimated 500,000 people in the UK.
