NHS trust to be dissolved
HEALTH bosses have unanimously voted to dissolve Scarborough and North East Yorkshire NHS Trust.
The decision, taken by members of the trust’s board yesterday, means that all of its assets and liabilities will be transferred to York NHS Trust.
The move to dissolve the trust and its acquisition by York will now be rubber-stamped by the Government.
But it also emerged that the merger, which had been expected to go ahead in April, had been delayed until July 1.
Speaking after the dissolution vote, director of nursing Teresa Fenech, who has taken a leading role in the merger, said: “It was a very important decision. I am relieved. I believe this will lead to real benefits for our patients.
“It is as important for York as it is for Scarborough. It will not be one-way traffic.”
Once the acquisition is completed it will be the first time ever that two organisations in the NHS, 45 miles apart, have merged.
Before the decision to dissolve the trust was formally taken, chief executive Mike Proctor had laid out the rationale behind the proposed move.
He said changes to how hospitals are managed, funded and governed, in addition to recruitment issues, meant that Scarborough and North East Yorkshire NHS Trust had become unsustainable.
The demographic of the population it served and the large area it covered had led to additional problems, he said.
“The trust is not clinically or financially viable,” he added. “If it was a business we would have gone bust a long time ago.”
Mr Proctor also said there “must be” an accident and emergency department and supporting services in Scarborough.
Speaking about the delay to the merger, he added: “I am slightly disappointed but it is nothing driven from our end or York’s end. Everything we had to do has been done.”

Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 10:13 AMThe Board of Directors at Scarborough were all tasked with the role of the merger, and no matter what the public opinion was, their remit was to merge. I am sure that they will be financially provided for. These folks didnt give a damn about the effects on the sick and elderly in this area. I just hope that Mr Proctor, Mr Chalk and Ms Fenech & Sir Chairman live in a rural retreat and in their ailing days dont need healthcare,

Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 09:19 AMResidents of Scarbourough you will see the benefits of the merger with York. Listen if you choose to live in the rural sticks then you cant expect healthcare on your doorstep. If you want to be closer to hospitals then move to the inner citys. I think not !! So be grateful for what you have.

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 10:53 AMI am very concerned about this. That many local people will have to travel to York to get specialist treatment. This can be a ordeal in itself if you are not all that well, disabled or elderly. I have just been to York hospital on Thursday to take my daughter there as Scarborough wont help. This was nothing major just a adjustment to her plastic braces she has in her feet, yet I have to do a around trip of 90 miles trip and I have to do this several times a year.

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 10:01 AM@1, not for too long my friend. Its not far either when you start repenting this non-reversible decision. This merger will make the York trust a biggest NHS Trust in the country geographically. They will have 2 hospitals in york, one in Scarborough & Brid and then health centres in Malton, Whitby.................etc etc etc. If the budget is not increased proportionatley, in the name of centralisation, they will start cutting services at Scarborough in the name of centralisation of services and this will happen without any formal consultation (and this is what York PCT and Hospitals trusts are notoriously famous for!!!!!!!!!!)

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 08:34 AMOh what a shame its delayed until July that means we still have to pay for the Directors to stay until then, unless they jump ship. Still July is a time time for bowls and they should get a job at a holiday camp.
