Warning on frozen reservoirs

YORKSHIRE Water is urging visitors to its recreational sites in Scarborough to stay well clear of frozen reservoirs.

During the big freeze 13 years ago, eight people drowned in ice-related incidents around the UK.

Geoff Lomas, catchment and recreation manager, said: “Our reservoirs are popular attractions all year round but, with the cold spell set to continue over the next few days, we’re concerned visitors may be tempted to walk on thin ice which has formed around the edges. Our advice is to stay well away. Although frozen reservoirs may seem safe to walk on, ice is very thin and the water beneath is likely to be very deep and extremely cold. Another danger is the strong undercurrents caused by the fact that water is being continually drawn into large submerged pipes.”
