Bridge replacement under way as road dug up
A SCARBOROUGH link road is being ripped up as part of work to replace an ageing railway bridge beneath it.
Westwood Bridge, in Belgrave Terrace, is part way through a two-and-a-half-month closure.
The ongoing engineering works have seen the road surface pulled back to reveal steelwork underneath.
The bridge replacement has been deemed “vital” to ensure the road is strong enough to carry vehicles.
The closure was announced after North Yorkshire County Council, which is responsible for highways in Scarborough, successfully made an order to close the link for the anticipated 10-week duration of the work.
However, now in place, the closure is causing an inconvenience to motorists who use the bridge as a short cut between Falsgrave and Westwood, and shoppers who visit Tesco.
The bridge is due to reopen at the end of March.
Cllr Andrew Backhouse, who holds the Scarborough Council portfolio for highways, acknowledged the work will cause an inconvenience but said it was necessary.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 05:14 PMRat Run = not needed in the eyes of the local authority = easier way round to locals. Short Cut = not important as ££££s are not being exchanged for planning permissions.

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 11:39 AMSo what is the difference between a "Shortcut" and a "Rat Run"? Trafalgar Street West was described as the latter by some council supporter of Tesco. I regularly travel this road as the best route for me. It is an important connecting road and should NOT be closed and the council should not be using such emotive expressions. That is the job of the Green Party!
