GREEN-FINGERED youngsters from two Scarborough schools had a bloomin’ marvellous time after creating some stunning designs for the town’s floral display.
The pupils from St Peter’s School and Wheatcroft School took part in Scarborough In Bloom’s annual competition to find the best flowerbed.
Faced with the task of creating a design on the theme of their favourite animal, the youngsters came up with a plethora of ideas, with a cat, mouse and pig eventually coming out on top.
Rhianna Cash, aged 11, came up with the mouse design, Abigail Bowes, six, designed a cat flowerbed and Jack Townsend, 10, was a winner with his pig design.
Sheila Johnson, from Scarborough Council’s community environment team, was involved in the project and said it was great to see children engaging with gardening. She said: “We chose these designs because they were the best for adapting to a flowerbed.

“The competition is a little bit different and the lovely thing is that the children can now make the beds their own and take them over for the summer. They really love this and enjoy getting their hands dirty.
“If we can get them interested in gardening and being outdoors at an early age that can only be a good thing.”
The fabulous designs can be seen beside Valley Road.
