No panic as students learn about local heroes
Scalby school has a Coastguard talk from Tony Dyer.120605a.
STUDENTS from a Scarborough school dialled into life in the cut and thrust of emergency services during a talk.
The Year Nine, 10 and 11 pupils from Scalby School were visited by coastguard Tony Dyer to boost their studies.
The students are all sitting a BTEC Public Services course, which focuses on the importance of teamwork and communication, while impressing upon them the vital role played by various services in the area.
Mr Dyer visited the school to help the pupils understand how the coastguard supports the local community and gave a demonstration and talk on the kit and techniques used during rescues and operations.
Mr Dyer showed off a plethora of tools from the back of his coastguard response vehicle, including buoyancy aid, helmets and a stretcher, which was put to use by student Oliver Penny.
Teacher Sharon Mallison said: “Having members of the public services in school really helps bring home the reality of the jobs they do.
“Seeing the equipment used enables students to understand how difficult and often dangerous people’s jobs are.
“They really enjoyed Tony’s visit and can now explain the importance of the coastguard more confidently.”
