Hole in window 'was glass fault'
POLICE have confirmed they believe a hole which mysteriously appeared in a Scarborough fish and chip restaurant window was caused by a fault with the glass.
As we reported on Saturday, Ann Bradley, the owner of Mother Hubbard’s in Westborough, said she suspected the hole was caused by a gun pellet after one of her customers was hit by the glass.
Mrs Bradley rang a window company who said they believed it had been caused by a BB gun.
Police initially said they were investigating the incident as a case of criminal damage, but are no longer treating it as a crime.
The officer in charge of the case said: “I suggested to Mrs Bradley that in my experience I had not witnessed damage similar to this before caused maliciously and that perhaps, due to the age of the glass, it was a structural flaw that had been agitated due to the heat of the restaurant and the recent inclement weather conditions.
“I therefore informed her I did not intend to put on a crime for the matter. However, if she got a glazier to attend who could tell us otherwise then she could contact us again and a crime would be put on.”
