Urgent calls for free Christmas parking

TRADERS in Scarborough are calling for more free parking in the run-up to Christmas.

The 60-strong Chamber of Trade is urging Scarborough Council to introduce more free parking to encourage shopping into the town in the run-up to the festive season.

The chamber says it believes more should be done to keep people shopping in Scarborough rather than travelling to York, Hull or elsewhere.

It has written to the council urging the authority to make all off-street car parks in Scarborough free after 3pm from December 1 until Christmas Eve,

In a letter to the council, Chamber chairman Chris Golder said: “We are aware that this goes further than the traditional off-street parking arrangements for the festive period, which only allows free parking on Thursdays and Sundays.

“Whilst this traditional waiving of parking charges is welcome, members feel it does not go far enough to encourage people into the town, particularly as late-night shopping has not really taken off and traders are now also competing to an extent with the out-of-town retail park off Seamer Road, which offers free parking.” Mr Golder says a relaxation of parking charges would “send out a clear message that the Council and Chamber of Trade are committed to maintaining and improving the shopping experience in Scarborough, particularly during this current economic downturn”.

The Chamber is anxious to encourage shoppers to stay in Scarborough after hearing that footfall figures during the main summer months were down on last year.

So suddenly, the chaotic traffic access and parking in our town, the very reasons for the park and ride, disappear on Thursdays after 3pm and on Sundays for a couple of weeks before Christmas. Surely it would be more logical for the P&R to be made free for this time?

Shopkeepers demand free parking ... council gives in ... everyone drives into town .... no one can get parked ... traffic chaos ... the shopkeepers demand the council do something about it, it's driving customers away ... there's a hole in my bucket ....
