Top award for farm shop at butcher roadshow

A LOCAL farm shop has brought home the bacon after securing a top award for their produce.

Trotters Farm Shop’s butchery team, based at the shop in Potter Brompton, attended the BPEX butcher roadshow in Harrogate earlier this month and were crowned champions in the Home Cured Bacon category for their ‘Dry Cured Back Bacon’.

They also picked up seven gold and three silver awards in the event, which saw 60 butchers from across the region put 300 products to judges for expert evaluation.

Paul Bradbury, from Trotters, said: “We’ve picked up a champion title for our sausages previously, so to get one for our bacon too is a real achievement, particularly as the competition is so tough!

“We always enter with the hope of gaining gold, but it’s not just about the awards, the feedback from the judges is invaluable and helps us improve each time.”

I've never tried Trotters, but I can recommend Glave's pork pies, sausages and lamb. The pork pies are especially good when they're hot!

You have lived "across the country" Yorkshire lass. Do you come to Seamer horse fair by any chance?

I've been a customer with Trotters for a couple of years now and I can promise their meat is amazing, I've lived across the country and I honestly have never tried free range local product to this standard!

I think that you made an error there #12. Correct me if I am wrong, but I feel quite sure that the beef does not come from the hens like the eggs do.

I have to agree about Gibsons. If anyone hasn't yet tried their steak, or chicken and mushroom, individual pies, I do advise you to do so - once sampled, you'll never go anywhere else. They're packed with prime meat. Anyway, dragging me back to the topic of farm shops. Farmers always complain that supermarkets and other retailers pay too little for their products, and cream off the lion's share of the profits. They may well be right, but I cannever understand why farm shops are therefore si much more expensive than retailers. I accept that the produce id usually of the highest quality (but not actually any better than can be obtained from a good independent butcher) but with the supermakets' massive cut removed, the farm shop products could be sold for much less. If the farmers could stop being so short-sighted, in trying to milk the last penny from each sale, they could offer top quality for lower prices and have customers queueing down the road, for a much-higher overall income.

Spence Butchers on Dean Road has the best meat in town in my opinion, an excellent family run business.

The beef at redcliffe farm shop is reared at redcliffe farm, like the eggs, they come straight from the hens there!

Glad they have won the award but I thought the pigs were those in the fields nearby. I was surprised to read on their web page after following the link, that the pigs are not reared locally but in Devon, and although it states 100% reared outside it goes on to say that they go inside for the last few weeks!

I am a master chef and fully appreciate that the quality of produce sold at trotters is second only to that at Gibsons on Ranshill. I know my meat!
