THE VOTE: We're not out of it yet
THE Vote is your chance to have your say on issues affecting Scarborough's business community.
The floor is open to you to vote and comment on debates put forward by business reporter Laura Crothers.
In February we asked you and the business leaders of Scarborough what lies in store for the economy in 2010.
The Vote: Will we see the end of the recession in 2010?
The result: Yes 44% No 56%
Here is a flavour of the responses we received:
Nigel Wood, director of Peace of Mind Financial Solutions: NO
"Although there are some glimmers there are many people that are starting to feel the impact of recession.
"I feel that there must be a period of levelling out before we start the steep road to recovery. Some are forecasting that mid- 2011 will see the property market start to move forward again. If this is the case, then many other areas will see growth.
''Key to this is the lenders not only having funds available, but also wanting to lend. If this happens, things will take on a more positive outlook."
Nick Sharples, branch manager of Scarborough's Handelsbanken: NO
"I think we are living in a bubble at the moment, so long as we don't have a hung Parliament then tough decisions will need to be made by the new government that I believe will increase unemployment and raise taxes to lower the country's debt, therefore restricting our ability to spend on the High Street.
"Effectively this would lead to the double dip recession a number of analysts have been predicting."
Chris Bostock, secretary of Scarborough's Chamber of Trade: YES
"I think once the election is out of the way things will start to stabilise and by the end of the year we should have returned to a healthy economy.
"Until then, though, I think we are in for a difficult time. Officially we are out of recession now, but the benefit of that is yet to be felt.
''I think if businesses can get through the next six months, things will start picking up."
David Hastie, partner of CPH Property Services: NO
"I still think we are going to see a difficult year, although signs of recovery are starting to appear. There is some interest in commercial property, but there are still problems out there that will affect the local and national market.
"There are a lot of businesses struggling, and I think it will take another 12 months, well in to 2011, before we come out of it completely."
Bob Thorpe, partner at Rayner & Co accountants: YES
"From a technical point of view my vote is yes as we will go back in to growth, but whether we will feel the benefits this year, the answer is probably no. There will still be difficult times ahead and there are still a lot of hurdles to overcome before we start feeling better off."
This month's question is:Should businessmen and women have more influence over what is taught in the UK educational system?
