New venture for ex-tax investigator

A FORMER tax investigator is setting up an accountancy business in Scarborough following retirement from HM Revenue and Customs.

After 22 years at the Scarborough Tax office John Barrett is hoping to put his experience to good practice as he looks to work with both accountancy firms and industry traders through his new business JB Tax and Accountancy.

Mr Barrett, who started working for the Inland Revenue in Scunthorpe after leaving school in 1975, and then later moved to Hull in 1978, said: "Towards the end of 2009 I had been offered early retirement, and

knowing that HMRC planned to close the Scarborough tax office I preferred this to the other likely options of either redundancy or a

transfer to some city centre location elsewhere in the UK.

"I actually like living in Scarborough and so I took the decision to leave and set up my own business.

"I am offering tax and accountancy services and initially have two strands to my business plan.

"Given my HMRC investigation experience and the fact that I believe I have formed a good working relationship with many local accountants I have approached the local accountancy profession to offer my support in relation to any existing or new HMRC enquiry cases.

"The other strand to my business will intially target small service industry traders for whom I believe that I can offer a good services."
